Rock salt is the common name of halite minerals and its chemical formula is NaCl i.e. sodium chloride. People often refer this substance as table salt. Rock salt is formed by the evaporation of salty lakes, oceans and seas. Rock salts are used in clearing the ice because it is the solution of salt and water that has a tendency to lower the freezing point of ice as compared to ordinary water. Clearing roads through salt during heavy snowfall is very popular because the rock salt helps in melting the ice easily and quickly which is deposited on the land. Usually people spread such salt on their pathways and driveway for melting the ice after a heavy snow storm. It is important to note that to melt the ice even a small quantity of rock salt is enough. So, there is no requirement of using a large amount of salt as it is a mere wastage. People also spread “road salt” on the pathways to enhance the traction during or after the snow storm. At the time of frosting or snow melting, rock salt absorbs the heat from the surroundings and stores it as latent heat energy and because of this, the process of melting is considered as an endothermic process.
