Rock salt is the common name of halite minerals and its chemical formula is NaCl i.e. sodium chloride. People often refer this substance as table salt. Rock salt is formed by the evaporation of salty lakes, oceans and seas. It is found in slightly different colors as the color of the mineral basically depends upon consistency and types of impurities. Basically it is available in white color or absolutely colorless but it is also found in the variations of red, pink, orange, dark blue, light blue, purple, grey and yellow. Rock salts are formed on the bed of evaporated sedimentary minerals due to the drying of lakes, seas and oceans. Rock salt is also formed by the evaporation of certain others minerals likes sulphates, borates and halite. Rock salts are used in clearing the ice because it is the solution of salt and water that has a tendency to lower the freezing point of ice as compared to ordinary water. Basically these rock salts are used in the areas where there is a continuous snow fall. Clearing roads through salt during heavy snowfall is very popular because the rock salt helps in melting the ice easily and quickly which is deposited on the land. Usually people spread such salt on their pathways and driveway for melting the ice after a heavy snow storm. It is important to note that to melt the ice even a small quantity of rock salt is enough. So, there is no requirement of using a large amount of salt as it is a mere wastage. People also spread “road salt” on the pathways to enhance the traction during or after the snow storm. At the time of frosting or snow melting, rock salt absorbs the heat from the surroundings and stores it as latent heat energy and because of this, the process of melting is considered as an endothermic process. Rock salt is also used in making ice creams as it gets easily spread around the container which helps in holding the ice cream easily. The rock salt UK is also commonly referred as the “table salt”. Table salt is the purest form of the rock salt and it is edible and very essential for the human body. Through surprising but it is true that this kind of salt is also used in the nonlethal weapons. Formation of rock salt is very important because it can easily trap the petroleum from the crust. Salt is used in many applications. For instance it is used in setting dyes in fabrics and textiles, manufacturing pulp or papers, producing detergent and soaps etc. It is used in almost every industry because it is the important sources of getting sodium hydroxide and industrial chlorine. Not only this, rock salt is also used in the fire extinguishers. Rock salt which is present in the lakes or oceans also helps in the formation of clouds which eventually results in rain. Thus rock salt is very important for many living and non living things present in the world. The rock salt UK are usually found in United States and Canada because there is the greatest deposition of minerals. New Mexico, Saskatchewan, Ohio, Kansas are also getting famous for deposition of minerals.
